Mobility Monday

Ever thought to yourself, “gosh I feel like I’m a pretty flexible person” but yet you’ve got tight and achy muscles all the time? Most likely that’s because you’re lacking MOBILITY not flexibility.

The difference between the two is subtle yet crucial. It all comes down to control. Mobility is your ability to CONTROL a range of motion. This differs from flexibility in that flexibility is the ultimate range of motion your tissue is willing to handle.

Think about it this way: You can’t bend over and touch your toes but when you lay on your back you can lift your feet way up high so that your thigh is 90 degrees from your chest. What gives? Well, when you’re trying to bend over to touch your toes your brain doesn’t trust your muscles to get you back upright afterwards - so it locks down your hamstrings and says “nope! Not today!” Then, if you lay on your back the sense of fear is absent so your tissues are able to lengthen their entire capability. What this boils down to is CONTROL of that range of motion.

Here at Minnesota Movement in Excelsior, MN we aim to find these kinds of faults in your movement patterns and give you the tools necessary to restore and improve them!

Did you even know there was a difference?! We didn't just pick Mobility because it started with an 'M' for training on Mondays! If we're talking raw athletic movement, it requires good mobility - which takes CONTROL over a range of motion. Two weeks until our next Mobility Monday!
