You drive a fancy sports car right? Goes 0 to 60 in 2.4 seconds flat?
Cool story bro.
But how good are your breaks?
You can only accelerate as well as your breaks are capable of decelerating.
Same goes for human movement.
Challenge / Fight for it.
I’m so pumped for this guy right here.
Always up for the challenge.
Always blows me away with results.
The other week we had a lot of fun (or at least I did) with a little modified bear wrestling after a training session.
We often hear of “functional fitness” but what does that look like?
Honestly, I don’t know that answer.
But I’m open to seeking what it means for every individual I get to work with.
I love playing around with movement. Even more so than that I love when athletes let me play around with movement so that we can actually find a strategy that their system finds useful.
Shown here are two variations of FRC's 90/90 position for hind leg internal rotation.

"Is what we're doing actually doing what we think it's doing?" is a question I'm constantly asking myself and the patients/clients I work with.
When it comes to objective measures of tissue change, taking a deeper perspective into what the skin, fascia, tendons, muscles are doing with MSK Ultrasound has been a game changer.
Imagine cruising around in a Ferrari. You’re burning around corners and zipping down on ramps like a badass. The powerful engine is a feat of amazement.
But then someone cuts you off. Or a deer jumps out in front of you.
Your breaks better be more efficient than your acceleration/power otherwise you’re veering off the road in a horrible accident or fishtailing into a spiral mess.
Same goes for human movement.
Classically - this kind of injury would render a brief period of immobilization and gentle ROM exercises followed potentially by a surgical intervention. This would bring us to about 3 months before loading it again with any similar weight from pre-injury.
But that timeline isn't going to work here. Playoffs start in less than two weeks.
So now our goal is to see how much better we can manage pain and improve ROM as well as strength before the first playoff game. Tall order - but it's possible.
What if we fall short? Well, we always have the immobilization and surgical routes to fall back on. We know we can't really injure the AC Joint further from where he's at - so why not try to get him on the ice again if it's possible?
Movement cues given (before filming for take-home reminders)1: Breathe and BraceInternal Cue: “breathe through your belly”External Cue: “increase the tension on that band”2: Hip Hinge:Internal Cue: “touch your toes and push your butt back”External Cue: “touch your butt to the wall like you’re shutting a car door”Both cueing produces the outcome we’re looking for. But which one is more efficient? External. 99x out of 100 it’s going to be external.
What’s the difference?!
Motor Control. That’s the difference.
I draw this diagram to folks all the time when trying to illustrate why I could care less if they can touch their toes or not.
Range of motion is worthless if you can’t own it.
The beauty of being able to see issues with an [arguably] more expanded lens is therefore being able to use more tools from the toolbag.Being a chiropractor can mean so much more than adjusting. It’s a hell of a tool - but only if it fits the job at hand.
